Noticing Matthew
Join Rob Croft at Wesley Church, St John Street, Chester CH1 1DA on Monday 21 September from 10:30am to 12noon.
What might we notice when we look again at the Gospel of Matthew? Matthew shares much with Mark and Luke, yet his Gospel has a character all its own. Often called the teacher’s Gospel, it gives us the Sermon on the Mount and stories and passages found nowhere else in the New Testament.
Matthew loves patterns. He uses pairs and groups of three, gives us seven parables about the kingdom of heaven, and repeatedly points towards prophecy being fulfilled. Peter also figures prominently in ways we don’t find in the other Gospels.
Underlying it all is Matthew’s understanding of God present in Jesus, Jesus present in the Church, and the Church present in the world. His followers are called to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
Come and explore some of these distinctive threads through gentle reflection, words, art and music. You might like to bring two or three verses from Matthew that particularly interest, inspire or challenge you.
We’ll meet in the worship area of Wesley Church in central Chester.
Free to attend. Donations to Retreat House Chester are welcome.
